DAYTONA BEACH -- Two brothers were arrested on homicide charges in connection with the Dec. 19 fatal shooting of a man in the back on Whitney Street, Daytona Beach police reported.
Channing Kendrick Black, 21, is charged with second-degree murder, and hois older brother, Matthew Howard Black, 40, both of Lockhart Street, was charged as a principle to second-degree murder, police said.
The 40-year-old victim, Roland Mitchell, was standing in a yard on Whitney Street about 7:30 p.m., a Friday, when he was shot in the back, police said. Mitchell was pronounced dead at Halifax Medical Center. The Black siblings were arrested the next day on the homicide charges and were booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail without bail, pending court hearings. The younger sibling, the alleged trigger-man, could get up to life in prison, if convicted. His older brother, charged as an accomplice, could receive up to 40 years in prison, if convicted.
Police have not released information on a possible motive in the shooting, except to say the victim recognized the men as they approached him in a pick-up truck while he was standing in front of 413 Whitney St. and tried to run when he was shot one time.
