Today I have the distinct honor and unprecedented privilege of appointinga third member to the Florida Supreme Court. As we begin this new year, the historic significance of having the opportunity to name four of the Supreme Court’s seven members does not escape me. I fully recognize that these appointments are some of the most important decisions I will make as Governor.
The members of Florida’s High Court will shape the future of our state for many years to come. Their decisions will affect the lives of Floridians every day, and I have felt the weight of each choice and have considered each candidate carefully and thoroughly.
This morning I announced Jorge Labarga as our newest Florida Supreme Court Justice. During his 13 years on the bench of the 15^th Judicial Circuit, Judge Labarga has presided over both criminal and civil cases. Before becoming a judge, he served as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. This broad experience has given him the opportunity to see firsthand how the law and our courts affect people’s lives. During his 28-year career, he has gained great understanding and compassion for those individuals involved in our court system.
Judge Labarga has also proven again and again his commitment to thoroughly review the details of every case that comes before him. He fully understands the importance of weighing the details without bias and applying the law in a balanced and just manner. Judge Labarga brings to Florida’s highest court all of the qualities needed in a Supreme Court Justice. He is extremely competent and has displayed integrity, fairness and compassion in each of his decisions.
Judge Labarga also brings an added dimension of diversity to the High Court. Born in Havana, Cuba, he came to Florida as a young boy and lived with his family in Pahokee. Later he earned a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Florida.
In each appointment I have made to the Supreme Court, I have looked for individuals who have demonstrated a life-long commitment to justice. I have sought individuals who represent the diverse population of our state and who understand the importance of judicial restraint and respect for the Florida Constitution. I have also looked for people who have shown the courage to make decisions that are just and fair – even when they are unpopular. I am confident that Charles Canady, Ricky Polston – and now Jorge Labarga – are such individuals who will serve the people of Florida with distinction, honor and integrity.
May God continue to bless the great state of Florida and her people in the coming year.
Charlie Crist
