DeLand motorcycle cop suffers leg injury in crash

DELAND -- A motorcycle officer suffered a serious leg injury earlier today when his bike collided with a small truck that turned into his path and that of another motorcycle officer at the intersection of Woodland Boulevard and and Plymouth Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Officer Kevin Jones, 25, a nearly five-year veteran, but only two months on motors patrol, suffered serious injuries to his right leg and was airlifted by Sheriff's helicopter to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. His condition was reported to be stable this afternoon. Fellow officer T. J. Petrella, was forced to lay down his motorcycle, but was not hurt.

The cops were heading south on Woodland at 10:30 a.m. when the truck heading north turned onto Plymouth and directly into their path, the highway patrol said. Gregory Rohr, 53, of DeLand, the driver of the truck, was issued a citation charging him with violation of a right of way, the highway patrol added.
