16th annual Charity Ball in New Smyrna Beach raises money for community programs

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A couple hundred people showed up for the 16th annual Holiday Charity Ball at the Brannon Center to help support Habitat for Humanity, the Council on Agings Meals on Wheels and the NSB Caps Scholarship Fund.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The city recognizes something needs to be done about improving the aesthetics of one of its key intersections: US 1 and Canal Street. The CRA will hold a meeting Thursday in the City Commission Chambers, 210 Sams Avenue. Two hours have been set aside for citizen input beginning at 5 p.m.

No response from New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission regarding Saturday power outage

NSB Utiliities CommissionNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Just how many people were without power or for how long resulting from Saturday night's thunderstorm is anybody's guess because media inquiries went unanswered.

As Headline Surfer reported exclusively, lightning from a fast-moving thunderstorm rolling through the city, struck a substation transmission line and knocked out power for customers in parts of the city.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The City of New Smyrna Beach Finance Department has earned national recognition for meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting from the Government Finance Officers Association in Chicago.

New Smyrna Beach to hold inaugural Easter egg hunt April 7 at Old Fort Park

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Children are invited to the inaugural New Smyrna Beach Easter Egg Hunt at noon, Saturday, April 7, at Old Fort Park, 210 Sams Ave. Nearly 6,500 plastic, colored eggs will dot the landscape, said Liz Yancey, city recreation and special events supervisor.

"This is the first Easter Egg Hunt the City has sponsored in at least 34 years," Yancey said. "Volunteers will take hours filling the eggs with candy. And if you've ever seen an egg hunt, you know it will be over in just a few minutes."

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The mayor was there in a bright red shirt under his blazer, the big artificial tree stood tall there, and so were several hundred people for "Christmas on Canal," the CRA-sponsored event with a cool $10,000 to spark the spirit of shopping. But several miles away on State Road 44, four to five times as many people were actively shopping at the new Walmart supercenter.
