DAYTONA BEACH -- The number of people killed on the roadways of Volusia County stands at two with the most recent a 56-year-old Port Orange motorcyclist in a crash near Daytona Beach on Sunday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

William Lee Hughes was riding his 18981 BMW motorcycle northbound on north on Tomoka Farms Road when he was struck by motorist Lakecia Harris in a 2007 Chevrolet, who ran a red light at the intersection while heading west on International Speedway Boulevard, troopers said. Hughes was thrown from his bike and pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:34 p.m. accident.

Pierson man dies after jumping from moving car

DELEON SPRINGS -- A 25-year-old Pierson man died Saturday night after leaping from a moving car in DeLeon Springs, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

Jose Perez was in the front passenger seat of the car while his girlfriend was driving. Perez wanted to drive, but the woman refused to let him because he was drunk, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said. As the argument escalated, Perez suddenly opened his door and jumped out, the spokesman added.

PIERSON -- Firefighters from four agencies continued to make progress Sunday on three brush fires that started in West Volusia the day before.

The Pierson fire, near the intersection Bell Fountaine Avenue and Carruthers Lane, grew to 243 acres and is 80 percent contained. Volusia County Fire Services was assisted by the Firewalkers, a multi-agency team of firefighters who specialize in brush fires, in this rural fire.

PIERSON -- Volusia County Fire Services responded to four brush fires in West Volusia earlier today sparked by dozens of lightning strikes and were helped in their efforts by a heavy rain storm that moved through the area between 3 and 4 p.m.

The first of the Saturday fires was reported at 10:08 a.m. near the Candice R. Strawn/Lake Dias Park on S.R. 11 north of DeLeon Springs. This fire grew to 5 acres and was contained by 4 p.m. A brush fire that grew to more than 120 acres was reported at 11:21 a.m. near Bell Fountaine Avenue and Carruthers Lane in Pierson, Volusia County spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.

Woman, 23, reported as missing and endangered from a home in Pierson found safe

PIERSON -- A 23-year-old woman reported missing from a home here Thursday night was found the following evening walking on a sidewalk along Granada Boulevard near State Road A1A in Ormond Beach, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman said.

PIERSON -- An outdoor burn ban issued last month for the cities of Pierson, Lake Helen and Oak Hill, as well as unincorporated areas of Volusia County, remains in effect through at least February because of dry conditions.

Deputy Fire Chief Kathy Weaver said the ban is necessary because of severe drought conditions and last month's cold snap that killed vegetation throughout the county.

A 50-plus acre brush fire in the Seville-Pierson area was contained Friday night, but firefighters will continue fighting the blaze in the Volusian Forest Trail, just east of U.S. 17 near Lake George.

PIERSON -- Homes were threatened at one point Friday, but firefighters were able to finally get a handle by nightfall on a brush fire that swelled from 15 to 50-plus acres, possibly caused by a lightning strike.

Several homes were threatened by winds heated up from the fire in the Pierson Seville area Friday afternoon. Moderate winds, that were hot and moving fast, threatened at least two homes, but firefighters were able to contain the fire by then. The fire was moving east near Lake George, off of U.S. 17, and in the vicinity of 260 Volusian Forest Trail
