NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A moment of silence was observed Tuesday at the start of the New Smyrna Beach City Commission in honor of Ed Cooper who died Jan. 23. He was 85.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A woman was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday morning after ordering her into her car in the parking lot at Walmart on State Road 44 and having an accomplice follow them to the 1900 block of Jungle Road where she was robbed of personal belongings, including her cell phone, New Smyrna Beach police said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Gusting winds were blamed for a downed tree that damaged a power line and left the NSB Regional Shopping Center in the dark for about an hour about mid-day Tuesday, April 7, retailers and the Utilities Commission said.

The May 9 event drew 600 people for the 7-11 a.m. breakfast, which featured a display of antique cars, a mini-yard and book sale and plenty of comaraderie.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Raymond B. Hallstrom, better known as "Ray" among his colleagues and friends in the Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia, will be remembered for his "good works" as the longtime secretary of the club, having died on June 30, at the Hospice Care Center in Edgewater. He was 64.

Courtesy photo. The body of Harvey Andrew Beltz, 56, of Edgewater, was recovered in the Intracoastal Waterway during the early morning hours of Saturday,  Oct. 17, the victim of a drowning having apparently fallen overboard just north of the South Causeway.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A fisheran's body was recovered this morning in the Intracoastal Waterway about a quarter mile north of the South Causeway Bridge where his 19-foot motorboat was spotted with full fishing gear at daybreak, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission confirmed.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A horse stuck in a muddy hole late Thursday night was rescued by firefighters, a veterinarian and her staff and a tow wrecker, at the Matava Family Farm, 225 Sugar Mill Road, a fire official said.
