NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 34-year-old New Smyrna Beach man was stabbed in the torso during an altercation late Saturday night on Jacaranda Cay Court and the alleged stabber was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery, New Smyrna Beach police said.

The victim, Dustin Hewitt, was rushed by EVAC ambulance to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he was listed in stable condition following the 11:11 p.m. altercation, Sgt. Shane Riggle said. He was suffering from an apparent stab wound in the upper abdomen.

Anthony Barongi, 85, of New Smyrna Beach, a veteran, died Friday, July 31, 2009.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An 85-foot charter fishing boat with 54 people on board that was stranded offshore Sunday after losing power was safely towed back to shore by the Coast Guard.

The Passtime Princess was out at sea for a typical 10-hour charter Sunday when its captain radioed for help at 5:20 p.m. that the vessel was stalled and inoperable seven miles northwest of Ponce de Leon Inlet.

Tina Landers, 48, of Edgewater, a native of Rome, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009.

Deloris E. Maust, 89, of New Smyrna Beach, who retired in 1983 as manager of Winter Park office of Florida State Employment Service after 36 years, died Saturday, August 1, 2009.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- There is no stimulus funding coming from Washington or the county for the proposed $10 million Marine Sciences Center at the former New Smyrna Beach High School off the North Causeway and that had city officials fuming Monday night.

Derek Wikso, 22, of New Smyrna Beach, was arrested Saturday on a felony charge of aggravated battery after allegedly stabbing 34-year-old Dustin Hewitt during an argument over a cell phone. Wikso was released on $5,000 bail the next day and Hewitt has since been released from Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach for a stab wound  to his torso.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dustin Hewitt never saw the knife that was plunged into his torso during an argument he had with his accused attacker over a cell phone, according to a police charging affidavit obtained by NSBNEWS.net.

But police officers saw the knife, described as a chrome-handle buck knife held by Derek Wikso.

Police officer Dominic Ellis noted in his report that he drew his own service weapon upon seeing the accused and hearing the victim and others shouting to him, "He's over there with the knife!"
