Votran bus service expects delays with some of its Daytona Beach routes due to Speed Weeks through Sunday's Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH -- Speed Weeks will bring heavy traffic to Volusia County in February and Votran riders
should expect numerous delays, interruptions and route deviations, said Michelle Coats, Volusia County spokeswoman.

Schedule delays will begin Thursday and continue through the Daytona 500 on Sunday.

Detours are subject to change without notice and buses will be rerouted to secondary roads when traffic becomes congested.

SunTrust bank robbed near Ormond Beach

ORMOND BEACH A man robbed a Suntrust Bank near Ormond Beach this afternoon, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

The suspect did not display a weapon, but implied he had one," Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught reported. "No one was injured during the robbery. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Task Force cracks down on street crimes in Daytona Beach, Holly Hill and Ormond Beach

Holly Hill man dies in hit-and-run accident

HOLLY HILL -- Police are asking the public's help in locating a car involved in the fatal hit-and-run of a 51-year-old man walking home early Sunday from the Eagles Club on Nova Road.

Timothy John Ward, of London Road, was struck and killed 2 a.m. in the northbound lane of Nova Road near Fourth Street, police said, adding that paint chips left behind by the fleeing car have led them to believe it is a 2000 or 2001 metallic gold Honda CRV.

DeLand man charged in connection with two I-95 wrecks in Brevard County

MIMS -- A 35-year-old DeLand man was arrested Tuesday on drug and motor vehicle charges after causing two accidents on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Gabriel Butler sped away from a trooper who tried to pull him over while northbound on the interstate about 3:30 p.m., before he switched lanes abruptly and sideswiped a car and sending it spinning into the median, the highway patrol said.

Butler then made a U-turn on the median and headed southbound, turning off on the State Road 46 off-ramp, before striking another car.

Deltona motorist killed in Tuesday night I-4 wreck

DELTONA -- A 26-year-old Deltona man was killed Tuesday night on Interstate 4, just south of State Road 44 and west of New Smyrna Beach when he was rear-ended, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Bradley Romanyk, who wasn't wearing his seat-belt was thrown from his pick-up truck, which overturned in the 10 p.m,. crash and pronounced dead a the scene, troopers said.

The other motorist, 68-year-old Palm Coast resident Robert Pickard, suffered minor injuries. The crash is under investigation.

Emergency officials to participate in drill Wednesday

DELAND -- Emergency officials throughout Volusia County will participate in a statewide tornado drill at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday. The drill is conducted by the state Division of Emergency Management with the National Weather Service to test emergency officials’ alert warnings and notifications.

“We always have the threat of severe weather, but it intensifies beginning in February,” said Charlie Craig, Volusia County Emergency Management director. “While tornados are possible in summer thunderstorms, our most violent storms have occurred from February through May.”
