Editor's Note: The New Smyrna Beach City Commission meets 6:30 tonight at City Hall to discuss the possible sale of the Angler's Club waterfront property on the North Causeway that has become a tug of war between citizens and the private organization as to the net worth of the acreage that was consumated in the mid-1940s with a 99-year lease with the city for the public-owned property for a paltry sum. NSBNEWS.net has not taken a stand on the issue either way.

Well I see it is August and time for the City Commission to sneak things through on a packed agenda when most of the citizens are on vacation or just out of town. If you wade halfway through the 417 pages of the Aug. 10 agenda you will find a ridiculously low-ball offer from the Angler’s Club to buy the property that has been the center of debate for over 18 months.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- With 197 votes cast Monday on the first day of early voting for the Aug. 24 primary elections, New Smyrna Beach had the second highest tally in Volusia County behind Deltona with 205.

Ormond Beach was third with 184 voters, followed by Daytona Beach with 170 and DeLand with 119.

The voting booths were at each city's main library.

In all, there were 875 votes cast by registered voters in the following parties, even though local races are non-partisan and state and federal are partisan: Democrats, 367; Republicans, 405 and other, 103.

EDGEWATER -- A 34-year-old city man was killed early Monday after he was struck by a Florida East Coast Railroad freight train on the tracks in the vicinity of State Road 442, also known as Indian River Boulevard, Edgewater police said.

DELTONA -- The smell of gasoline carrying through an open bedroom window at 4 a.m. Saturday woke a Deltona woman and prompted her to look outside for the source.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A small tornado touched down on the beachside just after 1:30 p.m., damaging the roof of a couple of homes on Sandpiper Avenue and Laurel Bay Drive, but no injuries were reported, New Smyrna Beach officials said.

"The roof of a home at 707 Sandpiper was damaged," City Commissioner Jack Grasty told NSBNEWS.net. "A garbage dumpster was moved about 75 feet into a car, but there wasn't much other destruction."

Doris Taulbert Carnes, age 81, of Edgewater, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Edgewater, surrounded by her loving family.  A private memorial will be held in Edgewater.

Mrs. Carnes was born in Charleston, West Virginia on February 16, 1929. The much beloved matriarch of our family will be greatly missed.
