Robert Lee Jones, age 65, of New Smyrna Beach, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Edgewater. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24 at Settle Wilder Chapel, New Smyrna Beach.

I felt special attending a dinner last month honoring Mike and Dana Thompson. Quite a few people attended the dinner held next to the golf course to recognize the well-deserving couple. Many spoke of their accomplishments, Mike as a former mayor of Oak Hill and Dana as a teacher at New Smyrna Beach Middle School.

DELAND -- Volusia County’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee will meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday, in the first-floor training room of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Coast Guard early this afternoon called off its search of a boat with two people aboard reported missing 15 miles from the New Smyrna Beach shore slightly less than 24 hours earlier.
NE SMYRNA BEACH -- The Coast Guard has been searching since 2 p.m. Saturday for two people missing in a boat that sent out a distress signal about 15 miles from the New Smyrna Beach shoreline.

The former New Smyrna Beach High School complex has been an eyesore for a decade now, but that's about to change with big bucks coming from the county through an ECHO grant to make way for the Mosquito Lagoon Marine Enhancement Center.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City Commissioner Jack Grasty was all smiles Friday and why not? The city received two ECHO grants from Volusia County: $600,000 for the Mosquito Lagoon Marine Enhancement Center at the former New Smyrna Beach High School, and $281,853 for the city's portion of the Cross Volusia Trail.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Police are on the lookout for a man with a handgun who tried to rob two people on North Myrtle Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Latrieka Chantel Hinson, 22, told police officer B. A. Morris that she and a friend were approached by a white man on North Myrtle near Ronnoc Lane, who displayed a handgun and demanded money from them.
Hinson told police she and her friend screamed out for help and the gunman ran off.
