Meanwhile, the White House says nearly 70 countries have come forward to try and negotiate a deal out of the punitive tariffs. US stocks tumbled again after a brief rally.

Also on the list are 60 of the "worst offending" countries - who will face tariffs ranging from 11% to 50%. The additional tariffs on China kicked in after Beijing refused to meet Trump's deadline to withdraw its own retaliatory levies on the US. Trump has said that the tariffs are vital for his economic vision, but experts warn a full scale trade war is a possibility.

Trump has raised the tariff on Chinese imports to the US to 125%, up from the 104% levy that went into force on Wednesday.
