NSB surfer, 55, bitten by shark that mistook his foot for a jumping bait fish

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- There's an adage in motorcycle riding that "it's not if, but when" you're going to crash. Well, the same came be said of surfers who challenge the sharks off the south for the primo waves.

Just ask 55-year-old Jimmy Johnston of New Smyrna Beach who has been surfing here since he was 10.

Politicians like Persis all wet in calls to take cars off beach

Here come those politicians again, looking to take motor vehicles off the beach. After all, a second 4-year-old child has been struck and killed by a vehicle -- not because of speeding, drunkenness or simple carelessness. That would be too easy. These little victims -- a girl in March and a boy on Sunday -- darted in front of a Lincoln Town Car and a Dodge Ram, respectively, and were struck instantly.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Embattled Chief Planner Chad Lingenfelter learned his fate just before 5 p.m. Wednesday when he met briefly with Personnel Director Carol Hargy: His job, which paid a base salary of $69,160 annually, was eliminated due to a budget cut.

Edward Joseph Caputo, 80, died Wednesday, July 21,2010 at home, in the arms of his family as he had wished. Ed was born and raised in New Haven, CT but he was an active duty and reserve military officer in the United States Army, so "home" was wherever he and his beloved wife and children unpacked their boxes and made spaghetti sauce!

NSB Cops: Gunman robs Kangaroo Express

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A man armed with a handgun -- possibly a revolver -- robbed the Kangaroo Express, 2600 N. Dixie Freeway, at 9 p.m. Sunday and fled with an undetermined amount of cash, New Smyrna Beach police said. There were no injuries reported but the clerk "was pretty shaken up," police Sgt. Valerie Joyce said.

Sheriff's Office: Woman robs convenience store near Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH -- A woman with a handgun robbed a convenience store Sunday near Daytona Beach, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

One employee was in the story when a woman with a handgun walked into Kelly's Food Mart, 1000 Derbyshire Road, and demanded cash. There were no shots fired or any injuries.
