Man found dead at scene of house fire near Edgewater

EDGEWATER -- The body of a man belived to be in his early 60s was found inside the back of a home just south of Edgewater that caught fire this morning, said Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson.

Fire and law enforcement officials are on the scene investigating the blaze at 118 S. Cory Drive. The fire was called in by a neighbor at 7:49 a.m. Edgewater Fire Department units were first to arrive at the scene.

Task Force cracks down on street crimes in Daytona Beach, Holly Hill and Ormond Beach

Sunshine State warming up

It's still cold out here this morning, but the worst is behind us, so says the National Weather Service in Melbourne, with highs expected to reach 61 degrees. Tonight will drop to 48 and then it's supposed to warm up this weekend with highs in the upper 60s. Now that's more like the Sunshine State we've become accustomed to.
Thankfully, the local citrus crop was not damaged by the nasty wind-chill situations over the past couple of nights -- really for the latter half of this week.

Sheldon Street resident beaten with sawed-off shotgun by would-be robber

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Despite being repeatedly beaten with a sawed-off shotgun, a Sheldon Street resident refused to give up his money to a would-be robber who attacked him in his yard last night, police said.
The 39-year-old victim was struck several times in the arms and legs in the 8:40 p.m. robbery attempt, but refused to give up the money he received after cashing his Social Security check, police Detective Dan Kennedy said this morning.

Edgewater fire victim identified

EDGEWATER -- The man found dead inside a Cory Drive home home just south of Edgewater that caught fire Thursday has been identified as 61-year-old Michael McCool, Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught reporte this afternoon.

The Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the identity during an autopsy this morning.

The Medical Examiner has also preliminarily ruled that McCool died of smoke inhalation, but a final determination will not be made until toxicology tests are completed.

SunTrust bank robbed near Ormond Beach

ORMOND BEACH A man robbed a Suntrust Bank near Ormond Beach this afternoon, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

The suspect did not display a weapon, but implied he had one," Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught reported. "No one was injured during the robbery. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Masked robber shot and killed at NSB pharmacy this morning

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A masked robber was shot and killed this morning by a security guard just before 10:15 at the Medicine Shoppe, at 653 N. Dixie Freeway, after he stuck a gun in the face of the pharmacist and demanded drugs, New Smyrna Beach police confirmed.

"Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call of shots fired," police spokesman Sgt. Mike Brouillette said. "A white male wearing a mask pointed a gun at the pharmacist and demanded drugs."
