US's 104% tariffs on China to take effect on Wednesday

FRANCE 24 English / April 9, 2025 / Tariffs that will effectively double the price of everything that comes from China to the United States is set to take effect at midnight on Wednesday, as Beijing stood firm on its plan to slap retaliatory duties on US imports in response to Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs. Meanwhile, the White House says nearly 70 countries have come forward to try and negotiate a deal out of the punitive tariffs. US stocks tumbled again after a brief rally.

Also on the list are 60 of the "worst offending" countries - who will face tariffs ranging from 11% to 50%. The additional tariffs on China kicked in after Beijing refused to meet Trump's deadline to withdraw its own retaliatory levies on the US. Trump has said that the tariffs are vital for his economic vision, but experts warn a full scale trade war is a possibility.

The news agency had been barred since February for not adopting Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America".
