FRANCE 24 English / April 9, 2025 / Tariffs that will effectively double the price of everything that comes from China to the United States is set to take effect at midnight on Wednesday, as Beijing stood firm on its plan to slap retaliatory duties on US imports in response to Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs. Meanwhile, the White House says nearly 70 countries have come forward to try and negotiate a deal out of the punitive tariffs. US stocks tumbled again after a brief rally. 

BBC New / April 9, 2025 / Donald Trump's "explosive" tariffs are now in effect, including 104% on China, the world's biggest exporter. Also on the list are 60 of the "worst offending" countries - who will face tariffs ranging from 11% to 50%. The additional tariffs on China kicked in after Beijing refused to meet Trump's deadline to withdraw its own retaliatory levies on the US. Trump has said that the tariffs are vital for his economic vision, but experts warn a full scale trade war is a possibility.

After announcing the measures on April 2nd, the US president urged people to remain calm while major stocks plummeted. On Wednesday, though, it was ultimately Trump who reversed course -- putting off imposing the levies for 90 days to give markets breathing room and allow for negotiations.

Trump has raised the tariff on Chinese imports to the US to 125%, up from the 104% levy that went into force on Wednesday.
