NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The body of a 25-year-old old out-of-state swimmer reported missing at 12:30 p.m. in the surf near the Flagler Avenue approach was recovered nearly nine hours later after apparently washing up on shore.

Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach to hold three summer camps

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach will host three WonderLand Summer Camps.

# A summer camp for 8 to 14 year olds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp will begin on June 10, and run for two weeks, ending on June 21. The cost of the camp is $240. It features "The Hobbit Adventure," a play by Edward Mast, adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, a suspenseful, fast-moving journey through the sometimes dark, sometimes charming, always compelling world of Middle Earth.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Norman Church was obsessed with winning the 2013 Lipton Cup Regatta off the Atlantic waters of New Smyrna Beach. So much so that he skippered "Obsession" into victory in the Spinnaker Class.

The regatta was held Saturday and Sunday with the first day much rougher going in the choppy waters.

“Building seas became quite a challenge resulting in four competing boats retiring with equipment or crew problems on Saturday,” the Smyrna Yacht Club said in a press release. “Sunday, light and shifty easterly breezes slowly increased providing for a fair and competitive race course.”

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 21-year-old surfer from DeBary paddling in the waves in the South Jetty, suffered the first shark bite this year season, Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris said earlier today.

The surfer, whose name was not immediately available, was bitten 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Marris said, adding he suffered a minor cut to his hand.

Volusia County had eight shark bites last year, most of them near the South Jetty, where sharks as long as 5 feet, are drawn to bait fish that swirl in the swollen surf.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The city's tourism hub -- bustling Flagler Avenue, is about to get repaved. Resurfacing will begin Monday and continue through Feb. 12.

To avoid disruption of business district traffic during the busiest hours, the Avenue will be closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily to through traffic.
