It's media overkill on 9/11 anniversary

EDGEWATER -- I am as touched by the events of 9/11 as everyone in this country is as I was that horrible day but I don’t think the survivors and families need to be reminded yearly with footage of that disaster and continuous news coverage.

They have never forgotten, most likely never will, but maybe the nightmares have started to diminish somewhat until they turn on a television or look at a newspaper before, during or right after 9/11 whatever year it may beat the time.

We should mark the disaster with the moment of silence of when the first plane hit the Twin Towers. Those people who were there that day should be remembered and they are in the hearts of all the citizens of this country. I personally do not want to watch people jumping from the burning towers or the towers falling ever again. That horrible sight will always be in my head. I don’t need to be reminded what happened that day 10 years ago. Does anyone?

Apparently, I am a bird of a different feather because I think all the hoopla is cruel.

I also think funerals are the cruelest thing a person has to go through and all my family and friends know I grieve in my own way but I don’t do funerals. I’ll cook your meals, watch your kids, listen to you talk through your tears for hours or whatever you need to help you through your loss but I will not go to a funeral.

When I was 17, I watched my grandfather sit across from my deceased grandmother for three days of viewings and services, staring at her corpse that looked like any minute she would sit up and laugh at us for weeping. It was one of the worst experiences in my life and I vowed never to go through that again or to put anyone who cares about me through it.

My mom agrees with me and we both have it in our wills we want no services and will be cremated.

I saw in the newspaper that there will be 24-hour coverage of 9/11 on television today, the 10th anniversary of the largest tragedy our country has ever seen and I think that is overkill. Making the survivors or families of the lost relive their experiences that day is only being done to sell newspapers, magazines and television advertising.

I am as patriotic as anyone but being a patriot does not mean we have to mark the anniversary of the tragedies of our country. We should celebrate the end of wars and happy positive things.

This anniversary does not need everyone trekking to Ground Zero yearly to ring the bell again for each loss. They can keep repeating that, but I know I won’t be watching.

Churning up everyone’s emotions is not letting the memory of the dead rest easy.

Fly your flags at half mast, say a prayer for everyone lost that day, do what you must to honor the dead and go on. Not a popular opinion, I know, and I am sure I’ll get some nasty comments but I say what I think and feel in my blog. That’s what I feel about today's overkill coverage.
