DAYTONA BEACH, Fla -- Henry Frederick has amassed more journalism-industry awards than any other individual member of the working press here in East Central Florida and is among the best in the Sunshine State.
Frederick, 57, has been the standard-bearer for excellence in daily news reporting in greater Daytona Beach since the mid-1990s and has won virtually every journalism award, but the Pulitzer Prize, which he believes could be achieved with continued hard work, dedication and perhaps some luck.
However, it's not chasing or amassing awards that motivate Frederick, as much as the innate desire to contribute to the betterment of the community by providing substantive news reporting that is meaningful, relevant, evokes emotion and results in change for the better, though he recognizes the latter is a longshot.
Frederick has always strived to challenge himself to build on the foundation of 20-plus years in his traditional print newspaper reporting to the transition more than a decade ago to the seemingly endless challenges and ever-changing technology with digital news coverage for more than a decade now where being an online news publisher enhances the news reporting experience with the added responsibility of generating revenue.
The advertising end of it always is the most difficult where Frederick has not allowed what little he has been able to generate over the years come at the expense of the journalism. And that, along with his experience, passion and standing in the community have enabled him to continue as a leader in the industry where print newspapers in this Central Florida market, and across the country have compromised their journalism coverage and their integrity for advertising and corporate profits.
And that is what is killing the industry and forcing many of the reporters to change careers because they don't have the skillset to do what Frederick continues to build on in dealing with the multiple tasks of online journalism with emphasis on multimedia, immediacy, and relevance. That is why Frederick continues to dominate and the continuing journalism awards attest to that.
Frederick has added to that journalism skillset, having earned his Master of Arts degree in New Media Journalism with academic honors from Full Sail University, having graduated earlier this year.
