57. NSB family dog quarantined a week for nip on child's ear
A New Smyrna Beach family's Staffordshire Terrier, similar to one shown here in this Wikipedia photo, was under a brief quarantine after nipping a baby girl on the ear when she touched an inoperable tumor on its paw.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An 8-year-old family dog, a Staffordshire Terrier named "Guinness," who nipped on a 1-year-old baby's ear that caused a small abrasion after she touched a painful tumor on its paw, was quarantined for a week before being returned to its family in October.
The quarantine comes in at No. 57 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2012.
The incident was reported to the county Health Department when the father of the little girl took her to the family doctor for a "minor abrasion" on her ear on Sept. 25, according to a police report, documented after the incident was reported by the health department to police here. The dog was quarantined by NSBPD before being returned to the family.
"This incident does not meet the requirements for a dangerous dog incident," police officer C.F. Norman wrote in his report.
Here is a synopsis of what happened as reported by Norman in his report: "(The dog's owner) advised me that his dog nipped at his daughter's left ear after she touched a tumor on its paw. The dog is approximately eight year's old and is not able to have the tumor removed. (The owner) and the Health Department advised that the incident was very minor. (The man's) daughter was treated for a small abrasion on her left ear by the family doctor."
The dog was quarantined because it was two months behind on its shots, the officer said in his report. Because of the circumstances, Headline Surfer / NSBNews.net has decided not to identify the father, except to say he's 34 year's old. The police report described the dog as a Staffordshire Terrier with a white coat.
