Mark Rakowski 'out' as development services director and Carol Hargy tenders resignation as personnel director

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Two major players in city administration are leaving the employ at City Hall: Carol Hargy, personnel director, is leaving voluntarily, but Mark Rakowski, the development services director, is out of a job involuntarily.

Rakowski's position was "eliminated," according to an unnamed source for NSBNEWS.net.

A staff member in Rakowski's office said he was out of the office and unavailable until next Monday.

The source said Rakowski "won't be back next Monday or any day after that," adding emphatically, "Rakowski is out."

Elderly DeLand man found safe in South Carolina

DELAND -- An 80-year-old DeLand man who was reported missing on Friday was found safe in South Carolina.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies learned through his relatives early Monday mornoing that William Henry McKnight was in Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg S.C.

The local law enforcement there had discovered McKnight driving on a set of railroad tracks and acting confused. He was not physically harmed, and he is expected to remain at the hospital until family members can pick him up, Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

Police searching for burglar who threatened occupants of a Sinnka Street residence with a handgun

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Police are looking for a man with a silver handgun who threatened people living in a home on Sinnka Street before running off just before midnight Sunday.

Police identified the suspect as Dwayne Morris, 21, who is 5 feet 9 and 140 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

NSB cops: CRA director not given field sobriety test

Even though he identified himself as a city employee, he was not given special treatment, police said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Community Redevelopment Director Kevin Fall was not given a field sobriety test, even though he had an open container of alcohol when he was pulled over last weekend, police said.

Major accident closes eastbound lanes of I-4 near State Road 44

DELAND -- The eastbound lanes of Interstate 4 at State Road 44 were closed to traffic late Friday night and early into this morning because of a major accident with injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

No fatalities were reported in the 10 p.m. accident, the FHP reported, but traffic was backed up to the St. Johns River Bridge.

That entrance ramp takes motorists to New Smyrna Beach on S.R. 44.

'Cudas defeat South Fork, 35-21 at home, advance in playoffs to sweet 16

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- 'Cudas senior quarterback A.J. Granger was all smiles after his team defeated South Fork of Stuart, 35-21 Friday night in front of the home crowd. And why not? With the win, the 'Cudas advanced to the sweet 16 in the district 4A playoffs.

"We're all coming together," Granger said of the offense and defense, both of which dominated play for the first three quarters before allowing two late, but meaningless scores by the Dawgs.

"I expect to do a little better next week -- I have to do better next week," Granger said of the postseason.
