Colorado massacre grim reminder it's time to turn to 10 Commandments

EDGEWATER -- The massacre in Aurora, Colo., with the gunman who killed 12 and wounded dozens of others during the midnight showing of a new Batman movie is tragic and senseless. But it's the person with a cold heart -- not the gun -- that pulls the trigger.

'Lost' treaty under water

ORMOND BEACH -- Senators Kelly Ayotte of New Hampsire, Mike Johanns of Nebraska, Rob Portman of Ohio and Johnny Isakson of Georgia were among the 34 brave souls in the U.S. Senate to give the “Law of the Seas Treaty” the deep six.

“Proponents of the Law of the Sea treaty aspire to admirable goals, including codifying the U.S. Navy’s navigational rights and defining American economic interests in valuable offshore resources. But the treaty’s terms reach well beyond those good intentions,” Ayotte and Portman wrote in a Monday letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

English should be the only language on voter ballots

I received my absentee ballot today and it is in both English and Spanish. It raises my hackles to see that on my so-called American ballot. As all of you who read my blog know, I am against anything, but English being used in this country for road signs, voting ballots or anything else including in Walmart on the signs there. You want to live in and be American, then learn the language.

Fourth of July: Declaration of Independence has secured freedom through the generations

PORT ORANGE -- 236 years ago, our nation adopted the Declaration of Independence, thereby securing the many rights and freedoms that Americans through the generations have always enjoyed. We celebrate independence in recognition of the brave founders of our great Republic, who risked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in the pursuit of liberty.

Celebrating Fourth of July in Oak Hill, Edgewater and across the country

OAK HILL -- The rains have made everything in Oak Hill look green and luscious, and the danger of wildfires has subsided so what am I thinking? Yep, fireworks and the 4th of July. We are so fortunate to live in a beautiful land where we are free and can celebrate our nation's independence any way we choose.

Supremes trash the Constitution

ORMOND BEACH -- In an unprecedented vote, a divided U.S. Supreme Court upheld Obamacare, the abomination that deprives Americans of individual liberty. The 5-4 vote reflects deep divisions in a country struggling to hold onto democracy because of the failed policies of a president who sees socialism as a means to an end.

Congratulations to the New Smyrna Beach High School Class of 2012 and its impressive president

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Congratulations to the graduating class of New Smyrna Beach High School. Seeing that the number of graduates totaled 392 reminded me of my own graduation in 1964. At that time the old high school on the North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach was brand new and our class consisted of 66 pupils. Our ceremony was at the school itself and we with our family and friends all fit without a problem.
