Elderly DeLand woman missing since Thursday found in woods

DELAND -- Marjorie Reynolds, a 75-year-old DeLand resident reported missing three days ago by a family member, was found this afternoon, conscious and alert, but dehydrated in a wooded area near the 1700-block of Marsh Road between Old Dayton Road and Highway 92.

She was located at 1:45 p.m., Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

As many as 200 people helped in the search for the missing woman, he said, including personnel from the Orange City Fire Department.

Volusia/Flagler unemployment rate up over previous month while national jobless rate dips slightly

DAYTONA BEACH -- Are we going to climb out of this recession anytime soon? Not anytime soon, judging by local and national unemployment figures.

Though the national jobless rate dipped slightly from 9.4 percent in July from the 9.4 percent in June, according to Department of Labor Statistics reported by CNN with 247,000 net jobs lost, locally in Volusia and Flagler counties, July's jobless rate was 11.7 percent. That's almost double June's 6.8 percent and closer to May's 11.7 percent, according to Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation.

DELTONA -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding a missing Deltona man.

Alfonso Milian, is an 82-year-old who suffers from beginning stages of Alzheimer's Disease and takes medications for high blood pressure and diabetes.

State Rep. Dorothy Hukill to join veterans today for fundraiser to benefit tornado victims

PORT ORANGE -- State Rep. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, will join members of the John E. Mealy Memorial Post 3282 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars today for a fund-raising barbecue to benefit citizens impacted by the recent tornado in Port Orange.

Convicted felon gets into fight with gas attendant over a buck and change -- put back behind bars

DAYTONA BEACH -- A convicted felon is back in jail after brawling with a convenience store clerk Thursday night over $1.03 worth of gas, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident, which took place at about 10:45 p.m. at a Circle K on South Nova Road near Daytona Beach, was witnessed by a customer who called 911 to report the altercation.

"We just pulled up and he grabbed one of the car squeegees and went after the guy working in the store," the witness told a Volusia
County Sheriff's Office dispatcher. "I think he was screaming about his money or something."

Volusia County proposing $65 increase in trash collection fees

DELAND -- Volusia County is proposing a $65 increase to the annual solid waste collection fee for unincorporated residences beginning in October. The fee funds the collection and disposal of solid waste and curbside recycling for unincorporated residences, according to Volusia County spokesman Dave Byron..

The current residential fee is $132 per year and has been in effect since 2004.

Volusia County library services web site address changes

DELAND -- Volusia County’s Library Services will be consolidating its Internet presence by discontinuing the www.vcpl.lib.fl.us Web address and directing all users to http://volusialibrary.org.

Volusialibrary.org offers the same array of features and access as the other site. The change was made to make the library system’s primary web address similar to those of other services of Volusia County Government and easier for the patrons to remember. The site also can be accessed from Volusia.org when users select “library” from the drop-down menu or right-side menu bar.

Volusia ECHO grant workshops Aug. 11 and 14

DELAND -- The Volusia County Environmental, Cultural, Historical, and Outdoor Recreation (ECHO) Grant-In-Aid program is starting the 2009-10 grant cycle with two workshops Aug. 11 and 14.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits that have an office in Volusia County, municipal governments within Volusia County, and departments of Volusia County Government. Eligible applicants who wish to apply this year must attend at least one of the two workshops.

Dillard's at Volusia Mall evacuated due to smoke

DAYTONA BEACH -- Dillard's, the clothing store for men at the Volusia Mall, was closed after the store was evacuated at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday because of smoke from an apparent electrical problem.

The store was evacuated and power turned off after smoke was detected near the elevators and escalators, Daytona Bech Fire Department officials reported.
