Yesterday, in a tragic accident, Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr., USNR (Ret.), executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs passed away.

Beach safety a matter of 'personal responsibility'

So the Volusia County Council is seeking quick fixes on how to make beach driving safer for children on the beach. New Smyrna Beach Mayor Adam Barringer was right on the mark when he told County Councilman Jack Hayman at a recent breakfast: "There has to be some personal responsibility."

Barringer, a former lifeguard wasn't being crass in the wake of a 4-year-old's death after being struck by a pick-up truck. He was being honest, brutally honest.

EDGEWATER COPS: Port Orange man charged witrh sexual battery on girl, 14, after drugging her

EDGEWATER -- A 27-year-old Port Orange man was arrested Tuesday on charges he committed sexual battery on a 14-year-old girl after drugging her to the point where she was incapacitated, Edgewater police said.

The alleged incident occurred in Edgewater the night before, Edgewater police Detective Chris DeRosa said, adding that the accused confessed to the crime in a telephone call from police, leading to his 12:10 p.m. Tuesday arrest.

Historian to discuss pinhole photography at DeBary Hall on Saturday

DEBARY -- Photographic historian Walter Johnson will discuss pinhole photography at 2 p.m. Saturday, at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 210 Sunrise Blvd.

His talk, “Pictures in a box: The art of pinhole photography,” will explore the history of the pinhole technique, which dates from the fourth century B.C. and is still used today. Johnson, a professor
emeritus at Ohio State University, will display contemporary and historic cameras and images.
