Blogger: Lack of respect for Hagood symptomatic of country's ills

I watched with interest the (NSBNEWS.net) video of the New Smyrna Beach City Commission meeting where in essence the elected officials kicked the city manager (John Hagood) to the curb. After nearly 30 years of service to the city, his efforts were rewarded with "here’s your hat there’s the door."

Throw Grandma and Grandpa Under the Bus

It was surprised that about half of the businessmen I lunch with were aware that the new stimulus bill contained a foundation for Nationalized Health care and “civilized denial of some medical treatments” for older people. I wonder what percentage of seniors were aware of this?

A cynic might call this new program “payback time” or “poetic justice” for the older generation in whose name Medicare and the Social Security schemes have been imposed. These two programs impose a very heavy burden on the younger generations.

NSB library to display art collections

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Art is in the air at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, which will display three art collections this spring.

Throughout March, the library will feature the photographs of Bud Moyer, a New Smyrna Beach resident who has received more than 350 state and national awards. Moyer owned a photo studio in Traverse City, Mich., for 35 years and photographed families, high school seniors and visiting celebrities including Veronica Lake, Charles Ruggles, Mary Pickford and Orson Bean.

OAK HILL -- A dead biker was found just before 6 a.m. in a wooded area just south of the Oak Hill city limits, according to the authorities.

A search was under way three hours earlier after Ronald Courtney, 47, of New Smyrna Beach reportedly called a friend on his cell phone to report he had crashed and suffered a broken leg.

His motorcycle was found in 6 inches of water in a ditch, which eventually led searchers to his body in woods.

weekend promotion supports beach recycling message

DAYTONA BEACH -- To promote its new beach recycling program, Volusia County will give free recycling tote bags to the first 1,000 beach-goers starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, at designated toll booths from Ormond Beach south to Ponce Inlet, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.

DeLand man identified as biker killed in crash last week

DELAND -- David Crider, 32, of DeLand, has been positively identified as the rider of a motorcycle struck and killed a weekago today by a pick-up truck at the intersection of Old Daytona Road and Amelia Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Crider was driving at a high rate of speed on Old Daytona Road when he made a left turn in front of the truck driven by 30-year-old Kevin Solari the highway patrol reported.

Sheriff: Suspect named in recent Ormond bank robberies

ORMOND BEACH -- Law enforcement authorities have identified the suspect believed to be responsible for at least five bank robberies in the past month,
including three in the Ormond Beach area.

Multiple arrest warrants have been issued for 44-year-old Leonard Willis of Jacksonville, but so far he has eluded capture.

Ormond bank robbery suspect captured in Georgia

ORMOND BEACH -- Leonard Willis, the Jacksonville suspect in multiple bank robberies in Florida and Georgia, has been arrested, Volusia Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson reported.

Law enforcement authorities captured Willis Wednesday morning fleeing from a bank robbery in Georgia," Davidson said.

Willis is being held at the Lamar County Detention Center in Barnesville, Ga., approximately 40 miles northwest of Macon.
