Circuit judge denies appeal of convictions and death sentence for Deltona Xbox mass murderer

DAYTONA BEACH -- Mass murderer Jerone Hunter is not getting off Florida's death row anytime soon, if ever, after a circuit judge's ruling Wednesday that he failed to prove ineffective assistance of counsel at his capital murder trial six years ago.

OSTEEN -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is on scene in Osteen investigating the
discovery of a body of an adult male with obvious trauma, agency spokesman Brandon Haught said.

The body was discovered in a wooded area near 1699 Osteen Maytown Road by a passerby. The Sheriff's Office was
notified at 5:34 p.m. and it was confirmed at 5:48 p.m. that the victim was dead.

The Sheriff's Office's Major Case unit is investigating this as a suspicious death. More information will be released as it becomes available, Haught said.

Sheriff's Office: New Smyrna Beach man arrested on charge of raping 9-month-old baby

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 9-month-old baby girl discovered Thursday afternoon to be bleeding profusely from physical trauma to her body was sexually assaulted, Volusia County Sheriff's investigators have concluded.

That night, investigators rounded up a 19-year-old man who had been left to watch the baby. Edwin Wren is being held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, facing charges of sexual battery on a person under the age of 12 and aggravated child abuse. Wren was living with the baby's parents, who sometimes left him to tend to the baby, according to the arrest report.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A masked man armed with a large knife, possibly a machete, robbed the Sugar Creek Citgo on S.R. 44 near New Smyrna Beach this afternoon.

No one was injured during the hold-up, which is under investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were dispatched to the store after the Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call reporting the robbery at 1:44 p.m.
