VCSO: Two teens killed in crash in Deltona when car strikes tree in median & overturns; third occupant critical
DELTONA, Fla. -- Two teens -- 16 and 17 -- were killed and a 23-year-old man critically several hours before dawn Sunday when a compact car driven by the 17-year-old struck a tree in the median of of the 1500 block of Providence Boulevard and overturned, an official with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Reubin Askew, who served as the 37th governor of Florida from 1971 to 1979, died March 13, 2014 with family members by his side at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. He was 85.
His death was announced to the media by Ron Sachs, a former aide and family spokesman.
The death of former Governor Askew comes in at No. 41 in the HeadlineSurfer.com countdown of the top 100 local stories of 2014.
Conrad, 29, of St. Augustine, is an attorney at Canan Law and previously worked as an assistant state attorney in the Seventh Judicial Circuit. He is also a member of the Jacksonville, St. Johns County, and Florida Bar associations. Conrad volunteers with several organizations including the Rotary Club of St. Johns County, the United Way of St. Johns County, and the Women’s Refuge of St. Johns County.
Port Orange City Planner Tim Burman given additional duties as interim community development director
PORT ORANGE, Fla. -- Port Orange's City Manager Jake Johansson has named Tim Burman as the city's interim community development director, replacing Wayne Clark who has accepted a position with the City of Asheville, NC, starting Nov. 23.
In announcing the change in a press release, Johansson did not provide information on the salary Clark was earning nor on how much additional pay Burman will make doing both his regular job and the new duties assigned to him. Nor was the release clear on when the new duties would begin or even what the position of community development director entails.

ST. CLOUD, Fla. -- By a unanimous vote, the St. Cloud City Council has tabbed Joe Helfenberger of Ottumwa, Iowa, as its new city manager with a starting salary of $159,000.
Helfenberger, who has a master’s in public administration, has 30 years of experience in local government management in several cities in Iowa and Wisconsin. His new job will pay him $37,000 more than what he was making in Iowa.

LAKE MARY, Fla. -- Gov. Rick Scott announced the appointment Friday of Andria Herr of Lake Mary to the Central Florida Expressway Authority.
Herr, 53, is the president of Hylant Orlando. She currently serves as a member of the Seminole County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Seminole State College Foundation Board of Directors.
Herr received her bachelor's degree from Stetson University in DeLand.
