59. Halloween parade in NSB draws lots of children
Headline Surfer photos by Henry Frederick / Nicole and Mike Kirkland of Edgewater with their 1-year-old son, Nolan, dressed as a shark, take in the annual New Smyrna Beach Halloween Parade.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Nolan Kirkland of Edgewater didn't win any trophies for his costume at the 2012 Halloween Parade, but his costume certainly was an eyecatcher. The 1-year-old Edgewater baby was dressed as a shark.
And how appropriate considering New Smyrna Beach's South Jetty is known for its shark bites among the surfing crowd.
The Halloween parade comes in at No. 59 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 stories of 2012.
Little Nolan was a good sport in his shark costume while buckled into his stroller and accompanied by his parents, Mike and Nicole Kirkland, both 22.
They chose the shark costume because Nolan's dad surfs the South Jetty area, though he has yet to get bitten by the 5-foot-long sharks that feed on the bait fish and sometimes mistake a surfe's extremities for a fish.
Nicole Kirkland said she made her somn's shark costume for 20 buvcks wih supplies from Target.
There were trophies galore for various age groups after the Halloween parade, sponsored by the New Smyrna Beach Parks and Recreation Department.
There were plenty of chldren at the parade -- literally hundreds of them with their parents or grandparents. Even some of the adults got into the act with an array of costumes for the 5-minute parade on Canal Street, that feared a couple of cop cars and fire trucks, in sddition to the costume wearers.
There were no politicians on hand for this event, but former City Manager John Hagood was on hand with family members, including grandchildren.
"This is a great event fo the kids," Hagood said. "It's great to see people put an effort into all of thse these costumes. Thy're all different."

Bob Garrigues, a local businss owner, like Hagood was there without a costume, but enjoyed the the sights and sounds of the fmily-oriented event.
"This is a great activity for the children of all ages," Garrigues said.
Headline Surfer presents a photo spread here showcasing the costumes and the children and adults adorning them. See if you recognize anyone in costume.
