DELAND -- With at last eight children hit by cars while walking or riding bicycles to or from schools across Volusia County, Sheriff Ben Johnson wants to make sure there are no such mishaps involving children coming onto or off school buses because of motorists not obeying the the rules of the road.

With that concern in mind, he's ordered his deputies step up traffic enforcement to protect students getting on and off school buses.

ORMOND BEACH -- The car of missing 79-year-old Rose Bruce, reported missing Monday, was found submerged in a pond across from her apartment complex residence. A body was found inside, but the authorities have yet to confirm it is her.

"Based on the description and tag number, Sheriff's divers have confirmed that the submerged vehicle is Rose Bruce's car," Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said in a statement released to the media just before 4:30 p.m.

ORMOND BEACH -- The search for a missing 79-year-old Rose Bruce of Ormond Beach is now in its second day and with an increasing likelihood that she may have been driving around in a lost or confused state, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office is renewing its appeal for the public's help in locating her.

Bruce was reported missing at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and at the time, "family members indicated that Bruce has never gone missing before and hasn't been diagnosed with any type of cognitive impairment," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said this morning.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An elderly man who had a knife plunged into his chest during an argument with a younger man overnight in the middle of the road in the 800 block of Downing Street survived and was in stable condition this morning at Halifax Hospital, NewSmyrna Beach police said.

The alleged stabber, Ronald Aexis Calderon, 33, was apprehended a short time later and was being held without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on a charge of attempted murder. The victim, 64-year-old Ronald Willsey, was initially listed as a trauma patient when he was transported by ambulance in the 8:50 p.m. Tuesday attack.
