Daytona cops: Big Tree Road man found murdered in his residence by ex-wife; cause of death not released

DAYTON A BEACH -- A Bug Tree Road man was found murdered in his residence Friday, Daytona Beach police said.

The body of Fred Johnson Sandlin, 70, was found in his apartment at 1601 Big Tree Road, No. 607, by his ex-wife who drove from Sanford to see him when he was a no-show in picking up his 9-year-old son, police said.

New Smyrna Beach lost its first game of the season in its home opener Friday, 21-12 to Deltona to fall to 2-1 on the season with Cudas head coach Lance Jenkins saying his team was outcoached.

The Deltona Wolves were strong in the trenches, easily getting to the 'Cudas backfield on several key plays that led to scoring on turnovers.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Cudas scored on the opening kickoff of the game with running Raheem Mostert sprinting 94 yards to put the Cudas up 6-0. But it was the power runs of Deltona fullback Josh Dagley who ran in three touchdowns and a stellar defense by the visiting team en route to a 21-12 loss at the NSB Sports Complex before a packed house.

Edgewater Fire Services to administer flu shots beginning Monday

EDGEWATER -- Beginning Monday, Edgewater Fire-Rescue will be offering flu shots at both fire stations (Station 55 – 1605 South Ridgewood Ave. and Station 57 – 2628 Hibiscus Drive).

Department paramedics will be administering the shots 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday from Department personnel will remain subject to emergency calls during these times so there may a delay when there is not a paramedic available to administer the flu shots.

NSB Amtrak fatality victim suffered broken neck in either push or fall from moving train

Barbara Arteta, 63, of New Smyrna Beach, returning on an Amtrak train with her husband from a trip to New York with an expected arrival in Sanford, was instead found dead Thursday on railroad tracks in southwestern Georgia.  She disappeared overnight Wednesday with her purse and $1,000 in cash. Only her shoes were left behind. Now law enforcement officials are trying to figure if she was pushed out of a window or fell, the latter more difficult to believe since they are difficult to open.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Barbara Arteta died from a broken neck after she was either pushed or fell from an Amtrak train in Georgia overnight Wednesday while on her way home from New York with her husband to visit a new grandchild, officials said.

Robinson, age 84, of Oak Hill, who died Friday, September 10 at Halifax Health Medical Center, Daytona Beach, will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 15 at Bella Vista Baptist Church, Edgewater, with Pastor John Marsh, officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at Settle-Wilder Chapel, New Smyrna Beach.
