Kids find human skeletal remains while playing near the beach

PONCE INLET -- Several kids playing ball near the beach came upon a grisly discovery Saturday when their ball landed in someone's backyard: Mostly skeletal remains of a human being.

The adult male has been dead for months, according to a report from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, which is treating the 6:30 p.m. discovery of the bones as a suspicious death. An autopsy is expected to be done today by the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office in hopes of determining a cause of death.

Former Bethune-Cookman employee charged with fraud

DAYTONA BEACH - A city worker in Daytona Beach has been charged with stealing money in her former job in the accounting department at Bethune-Cookman University, police said.

Elgena Wallace, 32, of Port Orange, who has worked in the Daytona Beach utility-department for about a year, was arested Friday on a charge of organized scheme to defraud. Wallace is accused of taking $40,000 from student checks and depositing the money into her own bank account.

Daytona Beach father and son charged in drug bust

A father and son are facing multiple drug charges after narcotics agents seized 7 pounds of marijuana and about 102 grams of cocaine from a house in Daytona Beach on Thursday, the Volusia County Sheriff's office reported.

The East Volusia Narcotics Task Force also seized a firearm, cash, 18 Ecstasy pills and a digital scale during a search of 160 Gala Circle.

Topless woman holds up traffic in DeLand

DeLAND -- A woman was taken into custody Wednesday after interrupting the flow of traffic by walking around topless, city police reported.

Police received a number of calls about the 30-year-old woman's state of undress at the intersection of South Orange and West Euclid avenues.

Police reported finding the woman "foaming at the mouth" while talking to herself when they arrived. She told police she was instructed by God to direct traffic. She was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.

Sports: NSB driver wins at New Smyrna Speedway

SAMSULA -- If it's got four wheels and a motor, New
Smyrna Beach's Tank Tucker knows he can drive it.

Tucker added a little more hardware to the trophy case
last Saturday night with his second consecutive win in
the Tommy Patterson Memorial 50-lap feature for
Florida Modifieds at New Smyrna Speedway.

It was his third overall victory in the nine-year history of the
event. He also won in 2001.

The 43-year-old Tucker has built quite a reputation
around the half-mile asphalt track here at Samsula and
also the various other Florida tracks over the years.

Preventing fraud everyone's responsibility

Recently in the news there have been many instances of fraud and attempted fraud.

Whether over the Internet, the phone or through the mail, consumers need to protect themselves from predators who are trying to steal their money or identity.

In this week's column, the purpose is to inform readers of different types of fraud. Please be aware of these scams. If something does not feel right, or if someone is asking for personal information, it may be a scam.

Two of the most popular frauds today include online fraud and check fraud.
