Gov. Charlie Crist explains tax relief measure he signed for Florida businesses

This week I visited five major metropolitan areas to highlight a tax cut Isigned into law last week. House Bill 7033, which passed unanimously by the Florida Legislature on the first day of the 2010 Legislative Session, reduces Florida's unemployment compensation tax for two years by delaying changes to the unemployment tax calculation methodology.

Sherriff's Office launches citizens academy

will have the opportunity to find out all of this, and more, during the upcoming launch of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office's Citizens Academy, agency spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas provides tax preparation assistance guide

WASHINGTON D.C. -- With the April 15 deadline approaching, there are various services that offer free tax preparation help for qualifying taxpayers. In addition to free, in-person tax return preparation assistance, most sites also offer free electronic filing so you can get your refund faster.

Certified volunteers receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across Florida.

DELAND -- The torrential downpours that caused widespread flooding last May remind Volusia County residents they should be prepared for the possibility of more floods this year. With that in mind, Volusia County Emergency Management officials encourage residents to update their preparedness plans before the spring showers arrive.

South Carolina Spring Breaker seriously injured in hotel balcony fall to ground between 2nd and 3rd floors

DAYTONA BEACH -- A 19-year-old Charleston, S.C., Spring Breaker who was climbing down from a third-floor hotel balcony to the one below when he fell just bewfore midnight Sunday, remains in serious condition at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach police said.

Courthouse deputies charge man with concealing handgun and ammo in briefcase

DELAND -- Alert Volusia County Sheriff's deputies discovered a handgun in a Tennessee man's briefcase during a routine security screening at the Volusia County Courthouse, DeLand, Thursday afternoon, an agency spokesman said.

Pavilion of Port Orange open for business

PORT ORANGE -- Retired home builder Alex Kajan remembers what a big deal it was when the Super Wal-Mart opened on Dunlawton Avenue nearly 15 years ago in addition to the Wal-Mart on Beville Road.

Since then, the growing city of nearly 56,000 residents have benefited from a Lowe's Warehouse, a Super Target, a Home Depot and other anchor stores and specialty chain restaurants.

But those pale in comparison to the open air Pavilion at Port Orange, a 550,000 square-foot retail and office complex complete with movie theaters.
