Volusia County Health Dept. to receive 43K doses of H1N1 swine flu vaccine

DELAND -- The Volusia County Health Department is monitoring the county’s H1N1 swine flu vaccine allotment daily and approving vaccine orders from local providers and practices who ordered it. Currently, about 43,300 doses of the H1N1 swine flu vaccine have been allocated for use in Volusia County.

Award-winning director Gary Lester to film Hollywood legend Johnny Duncan

DELAND -- Blue Heron International Pictures announced today that Daytona Beach Director Gary Lester has been assigned to film the company's newest documentary.

The production will feature Hollywood legend Johnny Duncan.

"We'll film his show next Friday night at the Athens Theatre in DeLand, Florida, as well as interview some of his fans," said Lester.
"We have also gathered dozens of photographs of people who worked with Johnny during the golden age of the Hollywood studios."

Volusia County Council members to attend Nov. 23 chamber meeting

DELAND -- Members of the Volusia County Council are planning to attend a city/county presentation and discussion on proposed economic development model changes at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in the Carlton Union Building at Stetson University, DeLand.

The meeting is presented by the Daytona Beach/Halifax Area Chamber of Commerce. The public is invited, but there will be no public participation.

Ormond Beach motorist killed early today when her Cadillac runs off 17-92 near DeLand and strikes trees

DELAND -- An Ormond Beach motorist was killed early this morning when she lost control of her 2005 Cadillac on 17-92, near Clark Bay Road, just east of DeLand, and slammed into some trees, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Amanda Ahl, 23, was driving east at 3 a.m. when the crash occurred, killing her.

Anyone with information on the accident is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 407-737-2213.

Worker bitten on hand by water mocassin at county landfill

DAYTONA BEACH -- A day laborer at the Tomoka Landfill was bitten by a water mocassin Monday and had to be transported to Halifax Medical Center for treatment, county officials said.

The worker's name was not released. He was cleaning near the weigh station off Tomoka Farms Road when he was bit on the hand at 11 a.m., officials said.

The bite was not considered life threatening.

17th suspect arrested in pill-pushing operation in DeBary

DEBARY -- Another suspect in a pill-pushing ring has been arrested, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said, bringing the total arrests to 17.

Scott E. Davis, 47, DeBary, turned himself in to Sergeant Virgil Ford at the Volusia County Sheriff's Office's DeBary headquarters at about 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Davis was charged with trafficking in hydrocodone and obtaining or attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach and is being held on $150,000 bond.

Hollywood legend Johnny Duncan to appear at Athens Theatre event; Edgewater's Charlie Carlson to emcee

DELAND -- Blue Heron International Pictures and The Athens Theatre announced today that PBS television celebrity Charlie Carlson will emcee "A Night With Johnny Duncan."

Duncan, a Hollywood legend, will appear live on stage at the historic Athens Theatre 7p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. The Box Office opens at 6.

DeLand motorcyclist killed in overnight hit and run on State Road 17

DeLAND - A 46-year-old DeLand motorcyclist was killed on Ste Road 17 just north of DeLand early this morning after he pulled in front of a pick-up truck and struck in the rear of the bike before he was then fatally run over by a second vehicle that didn't stop, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Rip currents blamed for drowning in Ormond Beach surf; rip warnings issued countywide for today

ORMOND BEACH -- Rip currents were blamed for a 55-year-old tourist's drowning Saturday, the Volusia County Beach Patrol said.

Philip Standley, 55, of Noblesville, Ind., was swimming in waist-deep water with his brother when they got caught in a rip current, Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said of the 3 p.m. incident near the Granada Avenue Approach.
