Fire leaves Deltona family homeless

DELTONA -- A family of six was left homeless Saturday when their rental home was destroyed by fire, officials said.

The Deltona Fire Department responded to the blaze at 464 Prscilla Ave., near Lake Monroe at 6 p.m. with visible flames. The fire was put out 40 minutes later.

The family -- three adults and three children -- escaped without injuries and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Flagler County man dies in car crash

BUNNELL -- A 30-year-old Flagler County man was killed early Friday when he lost control of his Jaguar on U.S. 1 and rolled over, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Miguel Anton was driving north on U.S. 1, about 4:20 a.m. when he ran off the road and onto a grassy area about a mile and a half south of County Road 2002.

The driver was not wearing his seat belt, the FHP said, adding he was pronounced dead at the scene. The car was totaled.

Volusia County unemployment for July exceeds state level

DAYTONA BEACH -- Volusia County's unemployment rate for the month of July reached 11.2 percent, higher than the statewide average of 10.7 percent for the same period, according to Florida Labor officials.

In nearby Flagler County, unemployment was even higher at 15.9 percent, the second most in the state, exceeded only by Hendry County.

Unemployment figures for August are expected to be released later this month.

Affordable housing advisory committee to meet Thursday

DELAND -- The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Volusia County Council Chambers of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave.

Members will discuss the status of affordable housing incentives strategies, committee membership and the schedule for the coming year.

The advisory committee recommends initiatives to the Volusia County Council to facilitate affordable housing in Volusia County.

Deltona man stabbed in stomach during fight

DELTONA -- A fight involving a knife in Deltona sent one man to the hospital with stab wounds and another man to jail charged with attempted first-degree murder Saturday night, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim's injuries were not life threatening, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

The incident started shortly after 9 p.m. when 28-year-old Jose Sorto-Ramos and 21-year-old Jose Gomez started fighting while they were both at a friend's house in the 2400-block of Alamanda Avenue, Haught said

11-year-old DeBary boy charged with false claims of having explosives on school bus

DEBARY -- An 11-year-old boy is facing criminal charges after he claimed to have explosives and threatened to blow up students, his school and a bank, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Other students on the school bus reported the threats Wednesday to the bus driver, who immediately stopped the bus in DeBary while on its morning route to River Springs Middle School.

Deltona man shot in leg

DELTONA -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Tuesday evening shooting in Deltona that sent a 31-year-old man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Deputies responded to the scene to search for the suspects, but due to a 45-minute time lapse in reporting the incident and the victim not knowing who the suspects were, no one was found. A friend drove the victim to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City where he received treatment for his non-life threatening wound. No other injuries were reported.

Call for volunteers: Countywide census committee meets Sept. 10

DAYTONA BEACH -- Volusia County’s Complete Count Committee hit the ground running this month, launching a public-awareness campaign designed to make the 2010 Census the county’s most successful census ever, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.

The committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Volusia County Sheriff’s Training Center, 3901 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach. Chairmen of the eight subcommittees will present progress reports.
