DeLand charter school teacher charged with sexual battery

DELAND -- Sex crimes investigators with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office have charged a teacher at a charter school in DeLand with sexually battering an elementary school student.

Jose Tirado, Jr. was arrested Wednesday morning on a warrant charging him with one count of sexual battery on a person under the age of 12. Investigators are looking into the possibility that there could be other victims. The victim who is the subject of the current criminal charge doesn’t attend the Boston Avenue Charter School, where Tirado teaches.

Wheelchair-bound resident and a relative attacked with stun gun during Deltona break-in

Two victims, including one who’s confined to a wheelchair, were shocked with a stun gun Tuesday night inside their home in Deltona by masked intruders who made off with a laptop computer, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman said.

Neither victim was seriously injured in the attack, which is under investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Body of a man found in Volusia County Landfill

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation after the body of a man was discovered this afternoon at the Tomoka Landfill just west of Daytona Beach. The body was discovered shortly before 2 p.m. by workers sorting through recycling materials coming into the landfill.

Ormond Beach mother brought back to Florida from New York on manslaughter charges in bathtub drowning death of baby

ORMOND BEACH -- Christal Giachetti has been extradited from New York and brought back to Volusia County, where she was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach this afternoon on a warrant charging her with aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Giachetti is being held on $150,000 bond.

Brush fire in Osteen consumes 1,500 acres

OSTEEN -- Volusia County Fire Services received a call for a brush fire in the vicinity of Lake Harney Road and Underhill Branch Road in Osteen at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, that by the next day had consumed 1,500 acres.

No structures were threatened and no roads were closed.

Fire crews worked to cut lines around the fire and provide structural protection at Lake Harney Road and Underhill Branch Road. Winds are pushing the fire west/northwest toward Gobblers Lodge/Osteen-Maytown Road in Osteen, where more crews are working the fire and cutting lines.

Florida now has 63 confirmed cases of swine flu -- none locally

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida has 63 confirmed cases in the following counties: one in Osceola, Alachua, Indian River, Marion, Clay, Collier, Lake, Manatee, Flagler, Seminole, Okeechobee, and Duval, two in Brevard and Palm Beach, 3 in Pinellas, Sarasota, and Orange, 7 in Lee, 8 in Hillsborough, 11 in Dade , and 12 in Broward .

New confirmed cases:

* Sarasota: a 6 year-old female
* Palm Beach: an 18 year-old male and a 75 year-old male
* Broward: a 60 year-old male
* Orange: a 21 year-old male
* We have 2 probables in Okaloosa County.

Drug buyers call Sheriff's Office for help after being ripped off

HOLLY HILL -- Two men who were ripped off of $12,000 during a drug deal that went bad called the Volusia County Sheriff's Office Monday night seeking justice.

Deputies investigated the case into the night, arresting one suspect
early Tuesday morning and obtaining a warrant for a second suspect," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said. "The money hasn't been recovered."

Brush fire near Lake Harney at 4,500 acres

OSTEEN -- Fire crews continue to work the lines around the 4,500-acre fire near the Lake Harney Woods subdivision. Today fire crews will continue to establish and widen lines around this growing fire.

In addition to the main fire, crews are plowing lines around a separate fire about a half-mile west of the large fire. This fire, which covers about 150 acres, began when a burning ember from the original fire was picked up by wind and traveled over the fire line. This fire is deep in the woods and not threatening any structures or roads.

Florida Division of Forestry works to contain multiple brush fires in Central Florida

DELAND -- Members of the Florida Division of Forestry Interagency Incident Management Blue team have established an incident command post at the Little Big Econ State Forest office, 1350 Snowhill Road, Geneva, to manage the multiple brushfires in parts of Brevard, Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties.

More than 100 personnel locally and from throughout the state are working together to contain seven large brush fires and numerous small
ones in the Central Florida area. At this time none of these fires are threatening any homes or structures.
