Discarded fishing line removed from struggling bottle-nose dolphin in Indian River Lagoon

OAK HILL -- Discarded fishing line was removed from a bottle-nose dolphin Tuesday after the mammal was observed swimming in the Indian River Lagoon near Oak Hill with the line cutting into its dorsal fin, authorities said.

Gov. Charlie Crist explains tax relief measure he signed for Florida businesses

This week I visited five major metropolitan areas to highlight a tax cut Isigned into law last week. House Bill 7033, which passed unanimously by the Florida Legislature on the first day of the 2010 Legislative Session, reduces Florida's unemployment compensation tax for two years by delaying changes to the unemployment tax calculation methodology.

Not standing for Pledge of Allegiance is un-American

I am outraged that the Florida Board of Education has put out a memo excusing students from having to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of our country. First, we have our president who does not place his hand over his heart when the National Anthem is being played and now our children can ignore the significance of our flag.

Part of the reason for this is the one nation “under God” part which may offend some students in a class. Well, too bad!

Lions Club holding barbecue dinner Saturday for $7

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The New Smyrna Beach Lions Club is holding a barbecue dinner from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lions clubhouse, 2340 Sunset Drive, just north of the football stadium. For only $7 a person, visitors can enjoy a special Maryland recipe one half-chicken with baked beans, coleslaw and a roll. Eat in or take out, with beverages available.

Mayor's Golf Tournament in April

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Last year the city hosted the Mayor's Challenge Golf Tournament to raise money, benefiting youth athletics. Due in part to last year's success, The Parks & Recreation Department has set a date making this an annual fundraising event.

Toddler struck by car late Tuesday night on NSB beachside airlifted to Halifax Medical Center

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 2-year-old boy was airlifted by Sheriff's Air-One helicopter to Halifax Medical Center with critical injuries after running into the path of an oncoming motor vehicle and being struck in the 400 block of Third Avenue on the beachside late Tuesday night, New Smyrna Beach police said.

The toddler's condition was not immediately known Wednesday, but police he was classified at the time of the 10:40 p.m. accident as a "trauma alert" by medical personnel at the scene. The circumstances that led to the child being out in th roadway in the first place are under investigation, police said. The todler's name was not released.

NSB COPS: Toddler struck by car after mother leaves restaurant and loses sight of him; airlifted with concussion

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The 2-year-old boy struck by a car Tuesday night in the 400 block of Third Avenue on the beachside was alert and crying when he was flown by Sheriff's Air-one Helicopter to Halifax Medical Center, said investigating police officer Matt Scheaffer who was waiting for an update on the todler's condition this morning.

NSB police caution merchants and residents to be on the look out for con artist
