Swimming advisories lifted at several beach locales in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH -- Swimming advisories have lifted at several sites in Daytona Beach where unusually high levels of bacteria last week have gone down: Florida Avenue Shores approach, International Speedway Boulevard and Silver Beach avenues.

South Daytona Mayor Blaine O'Neal, 43, died Friday of an apparent heart attack.

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Volusia County Council members expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden death Friday of South Daytona Mayor Blaine O’Neal.

“Blaine was a tireless champion for the citizens of South Daytona, always upbeat, always encouraging and positive,” County Chair Frank T. Bruno Jr. said. “He was passionate about making a difference not only in his community, but also throughout Volusia County and Central Florida.”

Funeral planned Wednesday for South Daytona Mayor Blaine O'Neal

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday for Mayor Blaine O’Neal at the Crossroads Baptist Church, 1851 S. Clyde Morris Blvd in Daytona Beach.

His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, in the chapel of Lohman Funeral Home Daytona at 1423 Bellevue Ave.

Daytona Beach Cops: Man found with gunshot wounds to his stomach and leg

DAYTONA BEACH -- Police responded to a report of shots fired at 504 Arthur St. on Sunday and found a 34-year-old man was was found on the first floor of the residence with gunshot wounds to his stomach and reight leg that weren't considered life threatening.

Volusia County's census participation rate hits 68%, surpassinf the 2000 rate

DELAND -- Volusia County’s census mail participation rate reached 68 percent today, surpassing its 2000 rate. The percentage is expected to rise over the coming weeks, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.

'Horsin' Around' generates upwards of $100,000 for Atlantic Center for the Arts

The Atlantic Center for the Arts' Horsin' Around fundraiser Sunday generated upwards of $100,000 in revenue for the NSB-based arts mecca, which drew 500 art lovers from throughout Central Florida.  In the video, ACA Director Ann Brady and Winter Park resident Doug Ware, who purchased a $1,900 painting speak with NSBNEWS.net.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The late Doris Leeper would have been very proud of the achievements Sunday by Ann Brady and her army of volunteers at Sunday's "Horsin' Around" fundraiser for the Atlantic Center for the Arts. And why not? The event, under a big white tent at the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport drew some 500 patrons of the arts and generated upwards of $100,000 for the 27th annual fundraiser.

The name of the event has nothing to do with fun and games. Rather, it originated on a horse farm many years ago because of space with proceeds, then and now, going to the arts, said Kelle Groom, public relations specialist for the ACA founded by Leeper.

Grand jury hands up first-degree murder indictment in South Daytona slaying

James Stevens, 27, of Deltona, charged Friday with first-degree murder in the beating death of his stepfather, Francis Ahern, 56, two days earlier, has now been indicted on the felony charge.

DELAND -- A Volusia County grand jury handed up an indictment Monday charging a 27-year-old Deltona man with the beating death of his stepfather, according to the State Attorney's Office.
