NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A small tornado touched down on the beachside just after 1:30 p.m., damaging the roof of a couple of homes on Sandpiper Avenue and Laurel Bay Drive, but no injuries were reported, New Smyrna Beach officials said.
"The roof of a home at 707 Sandpiper was damaged," City Commissioner Jack Grasty told NSBNEWS.net. "A garbage dumpster was moved about 75 feet into a car, but there wasn't much other destruction."
DELTONA -- The smell of gasoline carrying through an open bedroom window at 4 a.m. Saturday woke a Deltona woman and prompted her to look outside for the source.

The bright lights from the Florida East Coast Railraod train, shown in these two photos, shows through the darkness of night as it sits idled on the tracks on Indian River Boulevard early Monday after striking and killing a pedestrian on the tracks.
EDGEWATER -- A 34-year-old city man was killed early Monday after he was struck by a Florida East Coast Railroad freight train on the tracks in the vicinity of State Road 442, also known as Indian River Boulevard, Edgewater police said.

Sera and I were on a week-long vacation in Southern New England when I received a call about the small tornado strike on New Smyrna Beach. Thanks to the Internet and our NSBNEWS.net, we were able to deliver the news promptly to folks back home in Southeast Volusia and around the world for that matter, with two hours to spare before the Daytona Beach News-Journal finally got around to posting their own story on their website and rehash the next morning in print. And as is typical on a daily basis, Google also carried our breaking coverage on its news websites.
Editor's Note: The New Smyrna Beach City Commission meets 6:30 tonight at City Hall to discuss the possible sale of the Angler's Club waterfront property on the North Causeway that has become a tug of war between citizens and the private organization as to the net worth of the acreage that was consumated in the mid-1940s with a 99-year lease with the city for the public-owned property for a paltry sum. NSBNEWS.net has posted blogger Palmer Wilson's take on the issue here on the home page as well as his customary spot on the Opinion page because ogf the importance of the issue. NSBNEWS.net has not taken a stand on the issue either way.
Well I see it is August and time for the City Commission to sneak things through on a packed agenda when most of the citizens are on vacation or just out of town. If you wade halfway through the 417 pages of the Aug. 10 agenda you will find a ridiculously low-ball offer from the Angler’s Club to buy the property that has been the center of debate for over 18 months.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- If the race for the Volusia County Council District 3 seat were won on the basis of money alone, then Joie Alexander would be the clear winner with $30,320, Deborah Denys would be second at $16,114.25 and Ellen Darden at close third at $14,775.
But considering Alexander -- the incumbent at-large incumbent term-limiteed out of that race and trying to gain the Southeast Volusia seat held by outgoing Jack Hayman -- loaned her own campaign $10,000, the race would be tighter, if money were the only factor.
