NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Volusia County’s Human Services Office will sponsor a Summer Food Service Program for children at 70 sites from June 14 through Aug. 13.

The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides nutritionally balanced meals regardless of race, color, sex, disability or national origin. It is approved for areas in which 50 percent or more of the children qualify for free and reduced price meals during the school year.

Summer feeding sites provide meals to all children in the immediate vicinity in addition to those enrolled in the summer program.

Space Shuttle Atlantis takes off at 2:20 p.m. EDT without a hitch.

CAPE CANAVERAL -- After a successful launch Friday at 2:20 p.m. EDT, the STS-132 crew of space shuttle Atlantis began on-orbit operations.

Saturday, the six astronauts will survey the shuttle's heat shield, checkout the spacesuits for the upcoming spacewalks and prepare for docking to the International Space Station on Sunday.

After reaching orbit, the crew also was told that a preliminary debris assessment looks good.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport decreased 4 percent in April, compared with April 2009.

DELAND -- A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting late Sunday night while responding to a domestic disturbance call on South Blue Lake Avenue.

DEBARY -- At first, Volusia County Sheriff's deputies investigating a financial fraud gave 44-year-old Linda Stafford the benefit of the doubt and classified her as an unwitting dupe who didn't realize she was involved in a scam, an agency spokesman said.

DELAND -- Determined seems to be the key word to describe the men and women of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office who earned the honor of being named Employees of the 1st Quarter of 2010 Tuesday morning. Every one of them demonstrated a passion for their jobs, including a deputy who makes sure the Sheriff’s Office’s communications center is always running efficiently, and an investigator who never forgets to take care of crime’s victims. Also getting awards from Sheriff Ben Johnson at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach were an inventory control specialist, a telecommunicator, and a volunteer.

DAYTONA BEACH Youths between 9 and 15 who are looking for sun, fun and education might find an end to summertime boredom in the Junior Lifeguard Program. Professional lifeguards will teach water safety and first aid techniques during week-long camps in June and July. Junior lifeguards also will participate in daily team relays involving surfboard paddling, swimming, running and beach flags.

DELAND -- The River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Scenic Highway Corridor Management Entity will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday, in the first-floor training rooms of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave.

DAYTONA BEACH -- One hundred World War II veterans and their escorts will board a US Airways’ Airbus charter plane at Daytona Beach International Airport bound for Washington, D.C., at 6:26 a.m. Saturday. The group is the fifth from Central Florida to travel to the nation’s capital through the Volusia Honor Air program, which is organized by the Rotary Clubs in DeLand.

DELAND -- The May 21 workshop scheduled for the Volusia County Council and St. Johns River Water Management District has been canceled.
