The typical summer-time fishing weather of hot, humid and thunderstorms got interrupted by a tropical storm named Fay, which ended up taking 6 lives and did considerable damage throughout the state . The good news is that the storm is now history for northeast Florida. The storm did cause some turtle hatchlings to have problems but thanks to rescuers they were protected from the crashing seas until the seas settled down and they will be released. Near Melbourne International Airport a slew of confused animals were wandering through the grounds of the airport thinking that the field were wetlands  - four walking catfish,  two gopher tortoises, a blue indigo snake, and an couple of alligators.

I assume Obama realizes that it is necessary to continue working with the vestiges of the "old guard" if he lacks experience in foreign policy and in overall government administration.

Volusia schools, courts closed Thursday; NSB City Commission meeting rescheduled

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Deciding it was better to be safe than sorry, the Volusia County School District has called off school Thursday for a third day, out of concern of high winds and flooding due to Tropical Storm Fay.
 
With wind gusts of up to 35 mph and steady rain bands forecast throughout the day Thursday, school district Superintendent Margaret Smith made the decision earlier tonight.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Inside the cozy confines of Denny's restaurant on State Road 44, Robert "Chip" Higgins wasn't impressed by what he saw of Tropical Storm Fay just before 2 this morning as wind gusts of up to 40 mph and precipitation picked up outside.

"I think it's going to rain a bit and that's it," said the 29-year-old server from Edgewater as he waited on a handful of patrons. "I think it's been overblown by the media. Hey, good pun."

NSB mayor: 'Depends if this thing boomerangs'

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Mayor Sally Mackay was keeping her fingers crossed just before midnight Tuesday that Tropical Storm Fay would not  come back ashore any where near Southeast Volusia.

As of midnight, Fay was centered over Melbourne and headed in  northeast direction at 7 mph slightly over the ocean with a chance of coming ashore right here in the next 24 hours.
