NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia is holding its "Strike it Rich" fundraiser May 22 at the Brannon Center, with $10,000 as the grand-prize drawing.
Second place gets you three grand and third place, two grand. Tickets are only $125, (which admits two) with a buffet, open bar, music and dancing. This is the major fundraiser put on annually by Kiwanis to support children's educational and community programs.

DELAND -- Volusia County Council members Andy Kelly and Patricia Northey will attend the West Volusia NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 1. The event will be in the Carlton Union Building at Stetson University, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.
DELAND -- Volusia County staff will conduct a public workshop to provide an overview of proposed 10-2 cycle large-scale amendments to the county’s comprehensive plan. The workshop will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the first-floor training rooms of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave.

A fire Friday night destroyed the Animal Clinic of Edgewater on South Ridgewood Avenue, but nearly three dozen animals were safely evacuated and no persons were hurt. EDGEWATER -- The Animal Clinic of Edgewater on South Ridgewod Avenue went up in flames Friday night, but all 30 animals inside were safely evacuated as were the staff, Edgewater Fire Rescue officials said.
A discarded cigarette behind the building is believed responsible for igniting the 5:05 blaze that destroyed the clinic at 2305 S. Ridgewood Ave., with flames shooting through the rook and sending thick smoke into the evening air.
DELAND -- A 36-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night when he was struck on his Suzuki by a motorist in a car pulling out of a parking lot, DeLand police said.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 74-year-old woman passenger was thrown from a three-wheeled motorcycle and killed Friday afternoon on U.S. 1, near Arts Center Avenue, after the rider veered to avoid a construction cone.
Glenda Gene Dubon was pronounced dead at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach after her initial transport to nearby Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach with critical injuries following the 2:37 p.m. accident.
